Spread a Little Love

Valentine's Day: love it, or love to hate it? This day is at the top of the "most dreaded days of the year" list for many. Either you're single, or you're in that weird in between phase of a relationship and unsure of how to act today, or your significant other didn't quite do the right thing. This day often always fails to live up to the glory we associate with it.

Instead of being bogged down by the pressure of today: spread a little love. Maybe its not romantic love, but there are lots of other kinds of love to show. Get someone flowers just because. Write encouraging notes to people you love. Bring cupcakes into work. Do something you love to do today. It's not just about chocolate, unwanted teddy bears, overpriced roses, and overcrowded restaurants. Just spend today with the people you love -- whatever type of love that may be. Speak love in everything you do -- be extra kind, this day can be hard for others, and a little kindness goes a long way.

Last year, my roommates at university and I all made handmade valentines and left them all over our house to surprise each other. Some of us were single, in relationships, even engaged. It didn't matter. Our house was just filled with roommate love. Single or not, lonely or not, everyone has someone they love, or something they love to do. Be with that person or those people today. Do something that brings joy to you and the people around you.

Scandinave Spa

At -18°C (or 0°F)  I never thought I'd being going to an outdoor spa. But the Le Scandinave Spa outside of the beautiful ski village Collingwood is unlike anything I'd ever been to. Going to an outdoor spa was number 70 on my list of 101, and it took relaxation to another level.

A friend and I travelled up to this little ski town a few hours north to enjoy their five different baths (I'd call them pools) heated to three different temperatures: cooling, hot, and thermal.

Rather than just sitting and smell nail polish, this spa actively gets you involved in detoxifying your body and makes you do a little bit of work.

How?

Get in the hot or thermal bath for 15 minutes (open pores).
Get out.
Dunk yourself in a bath a third of the temperature of the previous one (close pores).
Repeat.
As soon as the receptionist explained the "routine" I was ready to head back to the car. My pores didn't need opening and closing. But the enticing view of the baths had me.

Plus, Le Scandinave also has "relaxation rooms" to go into after this polar dip. And a sauna,  eucalyptus steam room, and fire pits.

I soaked up every inch of this place. Even the steam room for all of 30 seconds. Until I needed to breath again.

Despite my disbelief that this crazy routine would do anything to my pores, my skin feels incredible and looks even better. Alright insane polar dip rinse and repeat, you work. Number 70 complete...and can be repeated anytime please.

101 in 1001

Today I turn 23. Twenty-three. This is the first birthday that I don’t achieve something by getting older – or have a Taylor Swift song to play all day long. Instead, I just think of Blink 182’s “What’s my age again” lyric: “nobody likes you when you’re twenty three”. Great, thanks Tom Delonge.

Sure there are things that make me feel older – there are celebrities younger than me, that I have friends that are married, and that I referenced a song recorded 15 years ago...(Google it, 15 years). But I’m definitely content with what I’ve achieved in these 23 years.

My 21st birthday does not feel like two years ago. That got me thinking: another two years and I’ll be 25. There are so many things I always said I’d achieve by 25. Initially, I quietly kept a list of 25 goals to achieve by 25. That list grew, and the items slowly got checked off. After some inspiration, the list became 101 things to achieve in 1001 days.

Catch Trade Winds is where I’ll write about completing this list over the next near three years. Three years of stepping outside my comfort zone, of pushing myself, and of finding extraordinary in the ordinary. Goals don’t have to be climbing a mountain or sailing around the world, it’s the little things that make life fuller and richer.

From the Desk Of

A few of my closest friends have taken to travel this summer -- San Francisco, Austria, and even Australia! Skype can be grainy, and phone calls are pricey. I've taken to the days of letter writing and it's quickly becoming a new hobby of mine. I found it so fun to find little things to fit into an envelope without paying the price of a package! Some great for small "just because" envelope:

  • Perfume samples
  • Magnets
  • Stickers (I used book labels with C.S. Lewis quotes)
  • Stationary
  • Tea, coffee, treats!
  • Small containers of lotion
  • Touches of home (I put in a penny)
  • Flattened flowers
  • Customized crosswords
  • Concert or sporting event tickets
  • I always put in a card, as well as a "gift guide"

It's also fun to get crafty! I sent some tea packages, wrapped in twine with a little clock from Anthropologie and a note I cut out.

What are some things you've put in care packages and letters?
